THE
FARM
On
the farm we eat mostly what we produce: eggs and meat from the chickens
and ducks; meat from the rabbits and plentiful vegetables and fruit.
The animals all have comfortable, spacious housing, are well cared
for and have routine veterinary check-ups.
Many visitors entertain themselves participating in the daily feeding
and care of the animals, an unexpected and pleasant alternative
form of therapy.
Gathering the eggs, and harvesting produce are daily activities
in which tourists can help out.
We make our own bread on a daily basis, brew beer, make wine, jams
and liquors. Visitors are welcome to join us in these activities.
The farm has two big organic gardens which we start to work in spring
(September), preparing the earth and planting. We fertilize with
the waste from the
rabbits and fowl. Most importantly, we fertilize with worm compost
which we produce from the organic waste from the house.
The vegetables we cultivate vary from year to year and are too
numerous to list all here. Some of the crops are various types of
potatoes, sunflowers, corn, tomatoes, tomitillo, lettuce, chard,
jerusalem artichoke, artichoke, cabbage, broccoli, mock oyster,
carrots; in addition, we cultivate medicinal and culinary herbs:
fennel, mint, oregano, lemon balm, lavender, comfrey, calendula,
malva; and ornamental plants: columbine, poppies, gladiolas, lilies.
Other
important crops are the fruits: boysenberry, strawberry, raspberry,
cherry, pie cherry, gooseberry, blackberry and walnuts. We are presently
planting many more varieties of fruit trees. The edible mushrooms
are harvested in spring and fall from the woods.
